Creating Empowered Lives

Read Write Inc.

Woodlands School is using Read Write Inc (RWI) to provide a consistent approach to Phonics across the school.

The RWI programme has five key principles:

  • Participation - children participate fully in the whole lesson - this prevents them from losing concentration and missing key elements of the teaching.
  • Praise - children work together, taking turns to teach and praise one another, as well as receiving praise from teachers and assistants.
  • Pace - a lively pace ensures engagement.
  • Purpose - teachers know the purpose of each activity and how it leads to the next.
  • Passion - teachers are passionate about their teaching as they see their children making rapid progress.

Children are put into groups based on their phonics stage and monitored by a "Reading Leader". This person has an overview of all pupils on the programme and the continue to assess the pupil’s placement, resources and achievements. We deliver the scheme as consistently as possible but always make adaptions to ensure pupil’s sensory and physical needs are planned for to allow the best possible access to the resources.

Our pupils are very proud of the phonics skills and are always very keen to show their reading abilities to visitors to the school. Their enthusiasm for RWI is evident across the school and are assessments show how much progress pupils can make when we use the programme consistently across the years.

Some children move onto RWI Comprehension when they have finished the phonics scheme. RWI Comprehension allows pupils to develop their comprehension skills whilst using engaging resources and a similar pace and style to that used during phonics.

As a RWI school we subscribe to the full school’s support programme which means we can access a huge range of RWI resources which can be iced by pupils both at school and at home. We also have regular development days where a RWI specialist visits the school and offers advice, support and training for our team. These are hugely beneficial and ensure that we are always development our practice and ensuring pupils are making as much progress as possible.

You can find out more information about the RWI programmes at Read Write Inc. Phonics - Ruth Miskin Literacy
