PSHE and RSE
Personal, Social, Health, Economics Curriculum
PSHE is a core area of learning. It is embedded into all of our curriculums to allow pupils to acquire and develop necessary life skills at a level appropriate to their needs and learning style. In the Early Years, Life Skills, Sensory, Physical and Preparation for Adulthood curricula, the emphasis is upon developing skills through a cross-curricular approach in all areas of school life.
As students develop, they are also given appropriate and timely increased access to discrete timetabled PSHE lessons, including Relationships and Sex Education (RSE), Health Education and Careers Education.
PSHE also supports and encourages our pupils to learn and use a range of life and independence skills at a level appropriate to their needs. The development of these skills is delivered through our wide range of subjects, building upon discrete acquisition, supported application and independent mastery.
Relationships and Sex Education Overview
Within our PSHE curriculum we highlight the key areas within the statutory Relationships, Sex and Health Education curriculum including: Health & Wellbeing, Relationships and Living in the Wider World. We follow the Jigsaw PSHE Scheme of Work, which provides a progressive and inclusive framework for learning and personal development.
Through Jigsaw, pupils develop an understanding of relationships, friendships, personal safety, emotional wellbeing, online safety, physical health and preparation for adult life. Learning is carefully adapted to meet the individual communication, sensory and cognitive needs of our pupils, ensuring that RSE is delivered in a safe, meaningful and accessible way.
Delivery of RSE and the Curriculum
RSE is taught across our Life Skills and Sensory curriculum and is taught explicitly through subjects including Science, Religious Education, Computing, Physical Education and PSHE. The Jigsaw programme provides a coherent structure which supports progression in learning across Woodlands School.
Although specific topics are planned and taught, other issues may arise incidentally and are addressed sensitively and appropriately. Staff use a variety of teaching strategies and approaches in keeping with pupils' ages, developmental stages and individual needs. This includes the use of clear and appropriate terminology, visual supports, communication systems and personalised teaching approaches to ensure learning is accessible, consistent and relevant for all pupils.
