Regional Step into Sport Camp - Plymouth Life Centre 25th February 2015

On Wednesday 25th February 2015 over 100 young people from across 15 schools in Devon and Cornwall took part in a lecture style event (with practical elements) led by experts in disability sports where they learnt about becoming a young leader and specifically supporting young people with SEND at sporting events. Supported by: Kate Grey – Paralympic swimmer and Sky Sports for Living Athlete Role Model Justine Moore – 2012 Paralympic Fencer competing in Rio 2016 Tyler Paul – World no.3 Table Tennis British Junior Champion Sharon Todd – Highfurlong School, Project Ability (Blackpool) Steve Richards – Angmering School, Project Ability (West Sussex) Sue Todd – Tutor and trainer of Get Set Sport Doug Williamson – The creator and patron of Table Cricket Participants took part in theory style lectures led by disability experts discussing what it takes to be a young leader and they learnt about the qualities needed of a young leader in supporting young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities… * Understanding your audience and their needs * Planning and organising a successful event * Running and delivering a high quality school sport competition * Delivering high quality content and sessions * Delivering high quality, fun and inclusive sessions * Getting more people involved * Supporting others to fulfil their potential They also took part in practical elements (inclusion sports) as well as listening to and watching demonstrations from Table Tennis and Fencing Paralympians. William Larkin, Alex Smith, Heather Williams, Cory Lovell and Brandon Fosker represented Woodlands School and were a credit to us. Those that took part will now return to their local area/school where they will be organising a Level 1 or 2 event using inclusion sports and working with young people with SEND.
